ORTIGIA
It's the island that you can see in the
picture: it's the heart of Siracusa, the historic center, the nicest and
oldest part of the town.
It's entirely rounded by the sea and
it's linked to the rest of the town by means of three bridges.
MEETING POINT
Ortigia again.
If you want to meet some people, go
to Piazza Duomo (Cathedral Square), better after 10,00
PM.
Yf you have a car, park it just at
Foro Italico (the "Marina"): there's a parking
where your can pay 1,50 Euro for six hours. Walk through
the ancient Spanish Gate, reach Piazza Duomo and join
people walking to Fonte Aretusa, a natural spring that is
one of the few places in the world where you can see the papyri,
used by Egyptians to make paper.
HOTELS
The finest hotels are in Ortigia:
the 4 stars Grand Hotel, from which roof garden you can
look at all the grand harbour and enjoy our unforgettable
sunsets (exalted by Cicerone as the best sunsets in the
world), and the 4 stars Hotel Roma, just near Piazza
Duomo.
The nicest hotel in Siracusa has been recently re-opened
after about 40 years of closure: the splendid 5 stars Hotel
des Etrangers, just in front of Fonte Aretusa, from which windows the
view of Grand
Harbour's sunsets is unbreathable.
If you're looking for a cheeper
solution, Ortigia is full of cheep bed and breakfast,
all located in ancient buildings near Piazza Duomo (for
informations, Azienda Provinciale Turismo, tel.
+39.0931.481232 or +39.0931.67710).
TWO RESTAURANTS
You can find a good quality/price
combination at Archimede, in Ortigia, near
Piazza Duomo: there are fresh fish specialities made as
well as the same fish would like and good pizzas, that
you can enjoy in a beautiful old court, recently
restored.
Another good restaurant, where you
can find all of typical dishes of Siracusa's cooking is Jonico
- A rutta 'e ciāuli. It's out of Ortigia, but you
can reach it also from there, after a good walk. In the
evening (when there's not our might sun) you can enjoy
food on its panoramic terrace, high over the sea, from
which you can look at whole Ortigia.
THE PIZZA
You can enjoy the best pizzas of
Siracusa at Frateria, which is a restored old
farm-house; there are just two problems: the 1st is that
on saturday and on sunday you have to queue; the 2nd,
that it's quite far from Ortigia (you need a car or a
taxi).
If you are in Ortigia, we can suggest
you the pergola of the restaurant/pizzeria Pescomare,
wher you can eat fresh fish too, or the Cenacolo,
which tables are in the little old Piazza del Consiglio
Reginale, both of them just near Piazza Duomo.
PUBS
In Ortigia there are several pubs
The oldest is Troubador,
located in a little court near the beautiful Piazzetta
San Rocco, along the evening promenade.
Just near there's the Sedano
Allegro, that on summer welcomes customers in a
little old court.
THE BREAKFAST
A good day always starts with a a
good breakfast. A typical Siracusa's breakfast (on
summer) is granita (iced cream, tasted of
almond, lemon or coffee) and brioche.
The traditional place to enjoy a granita
and brioche are the Foro Siracusano's gardens, along
Corso Umberto, where you can have your granita on open
air, under secular ficus trees.
